SUMMER CAMP INFO

SWIMMING

Swimming is a fun and rewarding activity for our staff and students, but we understand some parents may have concerns. To ensure the safety of all children and staff, we strictly follow these policies and procedures:

Water Safety Training: All staff members receive state-mandated water safety instruction every year.

Certified Lifeguard Onsite: We bring our own certified lifeguard (staff member) on swimming days.

Swim Assessments:

  • Each child is assessed at the pool to determine their swimming level.
  • No child may enter the deep end or use the diving board without passing the pool’s swim test.
  • The swim test is optional; no child is ever required to take it.
  • For details about the swim test, please speak with your camp teacher.

Parent Communication: We encourage parents to share any swimming concerns or information about their child’s swimming abilities with camp staff.

Pool Rules and Supervision:

  • Pool rules, expectations, and safety regulations are reviewed with all children before their first swim.
  • We maintain small staff-to-child ratios: 1:6 for YSA children and 1:8 for OSA children.
  • Each staff member supervises a specific group of children throughout the day.
  • Staff perform frequent headcounts, both in and around the pool.
  • Children and staff in the same group wear matching wristbands.

Swim Day Essentials:

  • Children should bring a swimsuit, towel, and extra shirt if needed.
  • Money for the snack bar is optional and availability depends on pool conditions, crowd size, weather, and supervision needs.
  • Our top priorities are safety, supervision, and making swimming enjoyable for all.

Sunscreen Application: Sunscreen is applied frequently throughout the day and documented. More information about sunscreen policies and practices is included in the the Health Section.

Additional Swimming Notes:

  • Behavior and Swimming: Loss of swimming privileges or sitting out of the pool is not used as a behavior consequence. If a child is unable to follow pool rules, they may be unable to attend on swim days.
  • Opting Out of Swimming: If you do not want your child to swim, please do not send them on swim days.
  • Scheduling Changes: If you need to adjust your child’s scheduled days, please contact the Enrollment Specialist.
